Before William the Conqueror's Norman Conquest of England (1066), Macclesfield was held by Edwin, Earl of Mercia; an established earl and supporter of Harold Hadrada (1015-1066) and later Edgar Aetheling (1051-1125). The manor of Macclesfield is noted in the Domesday Book as 'Maclesfeld', meaning 'Macel's open country', The medieval town of 'Maclesfeld' originated on the hilltop around what is now St Michael's Church. In 1261, the future king of England Edward I (1239-1397) granted the town a royal charter. Half a century later in 1502, the Macclesfield Grammar School was founded.
