The town is located in Manchester, North West England. It is situated 2 miles northeast of Cheadle, 156 miles northwest of London and 140 miles north of Cardiff. It lies 7 miles south-east of Manchester city centre, here the river Tame and Goyt merge to form the River Mersey. The town borders Cheshire and Lancashire.
Throughout the 1500s, Stockport was a relatively small townlet. Lying south of the River Mersey, the town relied on hemp cultivation and rope manufacturing. During the 1700s, it became one of the first places in the British Isles to produce silk. The silk economy gradually made way for cotton production during the 1800s, with the town also the centre for the UK's hat industry. By 1884, the town was exporting over six million hats per year. Homage to the towns hatting economy is paid at the Hat Works. The Hat Works, which opened in 2000, is the UK's only museum dedicated to the hatting industry
Stockport gets its name from the Old English 'stoc' (settlement) and 'port' (market). The first mention of it was recorded in 1170, with the town recorded as 'Stokeport'. Other recorded variations on Stockport include 'Stockford' and 'Stopford'. Many people who live there still refer to themselves as 'Stopfordians'.
At the forefront of the industrial history and culture is the Hat Works museum. The museum is located on the A6, in the Wellington Mill; the Wellington Mill was an 1830s cotton mill which became a hat works in the 1890s. The museum, which opened in 2000, is a Grade II listed building. It is the UK's only museum committed to the hatting industry. The museum takes visitors on a journey through Stockport's industrial history, providing two floors of interactive experiences and exhibits. The museum offers a series of events and special exhibitions to visitors
