The town was named after its founder, King Conglet, who established the settlement around the River Dane. In the Domesday Book of 1086, Congleton is recorded as 'Covintune', which means 'King Conglet's farmstead'. Congleton began as a small market town, with St Peter's Church as its centerpiece. In the 16th century, the town became famous for its leather industry, and by the 17th century, it was a thriving silk town. Congleton received its first charter in 1627, and in 1866 it was incorporated as a municipal borough.
