History of Warrington

Before the Norman Conquest of England by William the Conqueror in 1066, Warrington was held by Edwin, Earl of Mercia, who was an established earl and supporter of Harold Hadrada (1015-1066) and later Edgar Aetheling (1051-1125). The manor is mentioned in the Domesday Book as 'Walintune', meaning 'Waefer's town'. The medieval town of 'Walintune' originated on the hilltop around what is now St Elphin's Church. In 1246, the future king of England Edward I (1239-1307) granted the town a royal charter. Throughout the 1600s, Warrington had a bustling wool and textile industry, subsequently becoming a manufacturing hub in the 1750s. The Sankey Canal, the first canal of the industrial era, was constructed between 1755-1761, providing employment to local residents. The town's rich history is celebrated at the Warrington Museum & Art Gallery.
