History of Warrington

Before the Norman Conquest of England by William the Conqueror in 1066, Warrington was held by Edwin, Earl of Mercia, who was an established earl and supporter of Harold Hadrada (1015-1066) and later Edgar Aetheling (1051-1125). The manor is mentioned in the Domesday Book as 'Walintune', meaning 'Waefer's town'. The medieval town of 'Walintune' originated on the hilltop around what is now St Elphin's Church. In 1246, the future king of England Edward I (1239-1307) granted the town a royal charter.
