About Studio Cynefin

Studio Cynefin is a contemporary woven textile design studio in Cheshire, working out of a converted cotton mill on the Macclesfield Canal at Bollington. It is the studio of Jackie Stephens, an award winning weaver whose handwoven art, woven accessories and couture cloth are made to commission for fashion and for interiors. Alongside the commissioned work, Jackie runs weaving workshops for beginners and for experienced weavers in the studio itself.

It is a business with two quite different audiences. One is looking for a piece of work, or for cloth woven to a specific brief. The other is looking for something to do with a weekend, a skill to learn, a taster session to book. Both audiences were finding it difficult to find her.

The Challenge

Makers and artists have a particular problem online. The work is visual, the reputation is real, and yet the shop window is usually a social media profile owned by somebody else, where the audience is rented rather than owned and last month's work has already disappeared down the feed.

Studio Cynefin needed a permanent home for the work: somewhere a commissioning client could see the quality and the range, and somewhere a would be weaver could understand what the workshops involve and how to ask about dates. It also needed to be found by people searching for weaving classes and textile art in Cheshire, rather than only by people who already knew Jackie's name.

What We Built

We built Studio Cynefin a website that puts the work first. The design is deliberately quiet, because anything busy competes with the textiles themselves. Large images carry the gallery, with clear sections explaining the studio, the commissioning process, the workshops and how to get in touch.

The workshops were given their own space rather than being buried inside an about page, with the different levels set out plainly: weekend taster sessions, beginner workshops and intermediate or advanced tuition, available as scheduled classes or arranged on request. That separation matters, because somebody searching for a weaving class and somebody commissioning couture cloth are two completely different visitors and should not have to read each other's page.

Underneath the design we put the SEO foundations every site we build includes: page titles and descriptions written around the studio's own terms, a clean heading structure, fast loading images and a mobile responsive layout. Jackie has full CMS access, so new pieces and new class dates go up without waiting for anybody.

The Result

Studio Cynefin now has a permanent, searchable home that it owns outright. The gallery is no longer scattered across social posts, the workshop offer is legible to somebody who has never woven before, and the studio is presented at the standard of the work it produces.

For a business built on craftsmanship, that consistency matters more than any single feature. A visitor who arrives from a search, a card or a recommendation sees the same considered impression every time, and can act on it in one click.

Why It Worked

Cheshire has a genuinely strong independent maker scene, and almost all of it is competing for the same local attention. What separates the businesses that get found is rarely the budget. It is having somewhere real to send people, and content that answers the questions a first time visitor asks.

Studio Cynefin runs on the same pay monthly plan as every site we build: no large upfront cost, hosting, SSL, daily backups and support included, and a real person to answer the phone when something needs changing. If you are a maker, artist or independent studio in the area, our web design in Bollington and Macclesfield pages explain how it works, and you can see the standard we hold ourselves to on our reviews page.

Common questions

How much does a website for an artist or maker cost?

Our websites start at £39 per month with nothing to pay upfront. That includes the build, hosting, SSL, daily backups, CMS access and ongoing support. For a studio business, spreading the cost monthly means you can have a professional site without taking money out of materials, tools or studio rent.

Can I add new work and new workshop dates myself?

Yes. Every site comes with full CMS access, so you can upload new pieces, change class dates and edit text whenever you like. If you would rather not do it yourself, just tell us what you need and we will do it for you as part of your monthly plan.

Do I still need social media if I have a website?

Social media is useful for reach, but it is rented ground. Posts disappear, the rules change and the audience belongs to the platform. A website is the piece you own, and it is what turns a follower into an enquiry. The two work best together, which is why we also offer social media management if you would rather hand it over.

Can a website help me get commissions rather than just browsers?

It can, if it is structured for it. Commissioning clients want to see range, quality and process, and they want to know how to start a conversation. Setting those out clearly, rather than leaving a gallery to speak for itself, is what turns interest into an enquiry.

Do you work with small businesses in Bollington and Macclesfield?

Yes. We are based at Alderley Park, a few minutes from both, and we work with independent businesses right across Cheshire. Being local means we can meet you and understand the business properly rather than working from a form.

Your craft deserves better than a social media profile.

Commissions, workshops and gallery enquiries all start with someone deciding you are the real thing. A properly built website makes that decision easy, and it belongs to you rather than to a platform that can change its rules overnight.
