Website Redesign: When to Rebuild, and What It Should Cost

Websites age faster than most owners expect. Design trends move, Google's expectations move faster, and the business itself changes. This guide covers the honest signals that a redesign is due, what it should cost, and the option most businesses do not know exists.

Seven signs your website needs rebuilding

  • It looks broken or cramped on a phone. Most local searches happen on mobile; a site that fails there fails everywhere.
  • It no longer appears for searches it used to win, or never appeared at all.
  • You cannot edit it yourself, or the person who could has moved on.
  • It loads slowly enough that you notice, because your visitors certainly do.
  • The services, prices or team it describes are out of date, and updating them is such a chore that nobody does.
  • Enquiries arrive by phone from people who say they could not find what they needed on the site.
  • You are quietly embarrassed to put the address on a business card.

Two or more of those and the site is costing you enquiries every week, which is a real cost even though it never appears on an invoice.

Redesign or refresh?

A refresh (new photos, updated copy, a colour change) makes sense when the underlying structure is sound. A redesign is called for when the problems are structural: wrong pages, weak search foundations, no mobile thinking, a platform nobody can work with. Be honest about which you need; a coat of paint on the wrong structure wastes money twice.

What a redesign should cost in the UK

A traditional agency rebuild is priced like a new build, commonly four figures, plus ongoing hosting and maintenance. With our pay monthly model the arithmetic is different in two ways. First, a new build costs from £39 a month with everything included, so there is no lump sum to find. Second, and this is the part most businesses do not expect: if your website was built elsewhere and you move to us, we usually rebuild it on our platform at no extra charge when you join. The redesign, in other words, is normally free; you simply start paying the monthly package you would have paid anyway. Our guide to how much a website costs sets out the full pricing picture.

What a good rebuild process looks like

We start with what works: your existing content, your best-performing pages and whatever search visibility you have earned, then rebuild the structure around how your customers actually search today. You approve the new site before anything goes live, we handle the technical switchover including your domain, and redirects preserve the search value of your old pages. Afterwards, the same team that rebuilt it answers the phone: hosting, SSL, daily backups and support are all part of the monthly fee.

If your website has stopped pulling its weight, get in touch and tell us what it is doing wrong. We will give you an honest verdict, refresh or rebuild, and if the answer is a rebuild, it will probably cost you nothing beyond the package you choose. You can see everything that comes with a Fruitcake Media website on our web design page.
