History of Macclesfield

Before William the Conqueror's Norman Conquest of England (1066), Macclesfield was held by Edwin, Earl of Mercia; an established earl and supporter of Harold Hadrada (1015-1066) and later Edgar Aetheling (1051-1125). The manor is noted in the Domesday Book as 'Maclesfeld', meaning 'Macel's open country', The medieval town of 'Maclesfeld' originated on the hilltop around what is now St Michael's Church. In 1261, the future king of England Edward I (1239-1397) granted the town a royal charter. Half a century later in 1502, the Grammar School was founded. Throughout the 1600s, the town had a bustling silk-button industry, subsequently becoming a silk-manufacturing hub in the 1750s. The Macclesfield Canal was constructed between 1826-1831, providing employment to local residents. Hovis breadmakers was another Victorian business who provided employment to the citizens of the town. Several mill buildings are still standing today, with the town's museum paying homage to the local silk industry.
