Affordable Web Design: What You Actually Get at Each Price Point

Affordable Web Design: What You Actually Get at Each Price Point

Every business wants an affordable website; the trouble is that "affordable" covers everything from a free template to a monthly subscription, and the differences only show up after you have paid. Here is what each price point actually buys, without the sales gloss.

Free: the builder template

Free website builders are genuinely free to start and genuinely useful for testing an idea. The costs arrive later: the plan upgrade that removes adverts and connects your own domain, the apps that add the features you assumed were included, and your own hours doing the building. For a business that needs to be found and trusted, free is a starting point, not a destination.

Cheap one-off builds: the few-hundred-pound website

There is a busy market of freelancers and offshore services offering complete websites for a few hundred pounds. Some are honest value; many are a template with your logo dropped in, no search foundations, no mobile care and no one answering the phone next year. The recurring pattern we see from businesses that arrive with one: it looked fine on day one, never ranked for anything, and nobody could update it. The cheap build often becomes the deposit on the proper one.

The traditional agency build

A professional agency build solves the quality problem and creates a cash flow one: quotes commonly run into four figures before hosting, maintenance and updates, each billed separately. For an established business with capital, this route works. For a startup or a sole trader, that lump sum is exactly the barrier that keeps good businesses on bad websites.

Pay monthly: professional quality on subscription

Our model spreads a professional build across a subscription. Starter is £39 a month: a bespoke, professionally designed website of up to five pages with hosting, SSL, daily backups, CMS access, SEO foundations and real human support all included, nothing upfront, and an initial 12-month term. Growth at £79 and Marketing at £149 add pages, a blog, marketing support and more. The full breakdown, including how the marketing add-ons price up, is in our guide to how much a website costs in the UK.

How to keep affordable from becoming expensive

Whatever route you choose, three checks protect you. First, total the real cost over two years, including hosting, maintenance, apps and your own time, not just the headline price. Second, confirm who owns the domain and the content; affordable is expensive if leaving means starting again. Third, ask who is responsible for results; a website that never wins an enquiry is the most expensive kind at any price.

We publish our prices, our reviews and our work precisely so this comparison can be made openly. See what every website includes on our web design page, or get in touch for an honest recommendation, whichever price point it points to.
